The Importance of Choices

Everyone appreciates having choices, right? Let’s say you love chocolate! You would much rather someone ask you, “do you prefer to eat a Hershey bar or Skittles?” than for the person to just give you Skittles without seeking your input.

Take this scenario and apply it to all aspects of life. People need choices, including children.

If able to, provide your child with a choice between two or more options. This still puts you in control by selecting their options; however, this provides a choice for your child! This can be so important as we are teaching children the importance of voicing their desires. This can also give them a sense of control because they have a say in their preferences.

This principle of choice can be applied in many situations, such as which snack do they prefer, or which homework assignment they would like to complete first. This can help increase their tolerance to tasks that are not optional, such as homework.

Depending on the child’s level of comprehension and understanding, you may want to offer these choices by providing physical options, pictures, or verbal questions.

Always adapt to your child’s level of learning and go from there!
