Improving Executive Function Skills
You may or may not have heard of the term Executive Function Skills. These skills are used every day in life. Executive Function Skills are skills that develop in children at a young age and continue to grow as the children are older. Some children, such as children diagnosed with ASD or ADHD may have deficits with Executive Function Skills, or EF skills.
There is no need to worry though! These skills can be exercised so that they are improved throughout time.
These skills include impulse control, emotional control, flexible thinking, working memory, self-monitoring, planning and prioritizing, task initiation, and organization. Many times, these skills are the “how to” skills for a task to be accomplished. Therefore, when these skills are a deficit, it may be a little more difficult for an individual to accomplish tasks independently.
There are many ways to enhance these skills such as note-taking, checklist, keeping a calendar, games, visual aids, visual timers, routine, and staying organized.
By improving these skills, it can help individuals become more successful in their personal and professional lives. Try to incorporate a few of these suggestions into your everyday lives for adults or children to enhance these vital skills!
